THE NATIONAL BANK OF POLAND ISSUES 2 PLN AND 20 PLN COINS COMMEMORATING “POLES WHO SAVED JEWS” – AMONGST THEM ZOFIA KOSSAK

In recognition of and as an expression of gratitude for saving Jews during World War II, the National Bank of Poland issued commemorative 20 PLN and 2 PLN coins. The 20 PLN coin bears the images of three Polish heroines: Irena Sendler, Sister Matylda Getter and Zofia Kossak. The 2 PLN coin honors “Żegota”, the codename for the Polish Council to Aid Jews, an underground organization, founded in 1942 by Wanda Krahelska Filipowicz and Zofia Kossak, which operated under the auspices of the Polish Government in Exile. Żegota's express purpose was to aid the country's Jews and find places of safety for them in occupied Poland. Poland was the only country in occupied Europe where such an organization existed. The promotion was an occasion for both rescuers and those rescued from the Holocaust, their descendants, and those working actively for good Polish-Jewish relations to meet. The event took place on the 2nd December 2009 in the Belvedere Palace in Warsaw. Zofia Kossak's daughter, Anna Bugnon Rosset, was presented with a set of coins by the President of The National Bank of Poland, Sławomir Skrzypek.
